How to Find The Best Dentist For You and Your Family

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Finding the perfect dentist for you is not an easy task. Most of us simply make do with the dentist we have, unless they make a glaring mistake. Since almost all dentists are licensed, and insured, no single dentist referral source can accurately claim their dentists are the best. Besides your experience with that dentist is the only one that matters to you. Still, it’s a good idea to ask those who have experience with either the general dentist, or specialist, you are considering.

Word of mouth is a great point of reference for dental quality care, but hardly the only one, since for all the good experiences others have had with a specific dentist, there are also those who’s procedures did not work out as hoped. Even if someone has had a negative experience with a dentist, it does not mean the dentist isn’t qualified, or capable. People’s expectations have a way of coloring their views.

Here are some basic questions you should ask of the dentist you are considering:

When are their office hours? Is their office convenient to public transportation, or do they provide parking?

How do they handle emergency situations?  Some dentists are available after hours, while others use a referral service.

What types of anesthesia is the dentist certified to give?

Does the dentist strongly believe in heading off dental problems before they start?

Ask the dentist to estimate the cost of common procedures like a cleaning, filling, or dental X-ray.

Does the dentist participate in your dental insurance plan? What form of payment do they accept?   Do they offer a discount for one form of payment over another.  Can paperwork be done online, or in advance?

Are they currently licensed, without Board Review, and do they have insurance?

You can get certified as a dental hygienist at a community college, and take the classes part-time so you can have another job on the side. You could probably find the average amounts that dental hygienists make online.

What is a Sedation Dentist?

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Sedation dentistry is the new wave of the future. Because so many people have a fear of dentists, it is extremely hard for people to go due to their phobia. A sedation dentist is by far one of the best dentists you can get in the world. Sedation dentists are usually extremely hard to find and in this article, we will explore some of the best ways to find a fantastic sedation dentist.

First and foremost, you need to make sure that sedation dentistry is right for you. If you are the type of person who is extremely scared of dentists, have panic attacks whenever you find yourself in a dentist chair, or break down in an anxiety attack every time you even think about calling to make an appointment at the dentist, sedation dentistry is probably the right choice for you.

A sedation dentist is someone who will not only make you be able to smile beautiful by fixing all of your teeth, but they will also put you at ease and allow all of your anxiety to melt away. When you are working with a sedation dentist, you will feel absolutely no pain what-so-ever during any procedure that you have done.

The freedom from pain that people experience is one of the main reasons for choosing sedation dentistry and working with a sedation dentist. Whether you are having implants, root canals, extractions, or just having a cavity filled, a sedation dentist  can calm all of your fears and make sure that you feel absolutely no pain.

One of the main concerns that many potential customers have when it comes to sedation dentistry is the safe factor, many people do not understand sedation and are scared that it will harm them in the long run. First and foremost, sedation dentistry is safe and effective for people who have panic attacks or are just generally nervous about a dentist appointment in general. Before you are even placed under sedation, a sedation dentist will review all of your medical history and while you are under sedation, you will be monitored extremely close.

As you can see there are many different benefits when it comes to sedation dentistry with a sedation dentist. Because you will be on close terms with your dentist, you want to make sure to find the best one. To this end, you can often get recommendations from friends, family members, neighbors, and people from work. Failing that, think about talking to your family dentist. He or she is likely well aware of your phobia, and will be more than happy to refer you to a sedation dentist. There are also dental directories available online. Since many of them are localized, you will be able to narrow down your search to dentists. You must always remember, however, that you need to meet potential candidates before making a final choice.

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) February 25, 2009

For nearly 10,000 specially trained dentists and their staffs, this year’s switch to daylight savings time will mean more than resetting their clocks and checking their smoke alarms.

These dentists will use the occasion to participate in the first annual Sedation Dentistry Safety Week, March 9-13, five days dedicated to ensuring patients that sedation dentistry, an increasingly popular method of receiving vital dental care, is not only pain-free and anxiety-free, it is also extraordinarily safe.

“Even beyond patient comfort, patient safety has always been Job #1,” notes Dr. Michael Silverman, national chairman of Sedation Dentistry Safety Week and one of the world’s leading sedation dentistry educators.

Dentists trained by Dr. Silverman and his colleagues at DOCS Education, which he co-founded in 1999, have safely treated more than 1.25 million adult dental patients by carefully adhering to or exceeding standards recommended by the American Dental Association and set by individual state dental boards.

“While sedation dentistry has become the mainstream alternative for fearful and anxious patients, Sedation Dentistry Safety Week is designed to reinforce the dental profession’s commitment to being constantly vigilant on behalf of patient safety,” Dr. Silverman notes.

Activities during Sedation Dentistry Safety Week will include a review of key steps that all sedation dentists and their staffs must take with each and every sedation patient. Core safety equipment and supplies will also be checked. Patients, themselves, will be reminded of what they can do to assist their dental office’s team, including providing dentists with complete and accurate medical histories ahead of any procedures.

These are the specific themes assigned to each day of Sedation Dentistry Safety Week:

Monday, March 9th – The Sedation Dentistry Safety Checklist: A Review of Protocols, Equipment and Supplies

Tuesday, March 10th – Team Work: The Role of Dental Assistants and Staff in Assuring Safety

Wednesday, March 11th – The 2009 Safe Sedation Dentists of the Year: Recognizing Excellence in Patient Safety and Comfort

Thursday, March 12th – A Consumer’s Guide to Safe, Anxiety-Free Sedation Dentistry: What Patients Need to Know To Optimize Their Experience

Friday, March 13th – Talk to a Sedation Dentist Day: Veteran Sedation Dentists Will Be “On Call” to Answer Questions from Other Dental Professionals and Consumers.

All dentists who offer oral conscious sedation services to their patients are encouraged to participate in Sedation Dentistry Safety Week, regardless of where they received their training, says DOCS’ Dr. Silverman.

Dentists who would like more information on sedation dentistry safety or training are encouraged to phone: 877-325-3627. Consumers with questions about fear-free, anxiety-free sedation dentistry can call (888) 858-7972.
